Chapter XV

Over the next week, the Darcys had Walsh drive them hither and yon as they looked for more of Dublin’s offerings. They didn’t mind that lack of exact planning in their travels around the town as they gave Walsh instructions to just take them to new places. However, they did request him to carry them to Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s both of which proved a bit discouraging. It was not that the cathedrals were lacking in size or a type of beauty, but they found it disappointing that the two buildings were experiencing a lack of maintenance which was contributing to major problems that would eventually require major repairs. It was not known if it was a lack of money or just a lack of interest or even the original construction that might have led to problems later on.

St. Patrick’s was of special interest because Jonathan Swift had been dean for 32 years. During his tenure, his most famous sermons and his ‘Irish Tracts’ were given. Although the Darcys wished to see the cathedral where he served as dean, they found it was closed to visitors due to repairs that were being made. The priest made it clear that certain parts of the building were not safe to traverse, but he allowed them to stand in the entrance and see what they could from that vantage point. It satisfied some of their curiosity about the large building but not all.

A few days before they were to return to Patrick’s pub one more time and leave for Cork two days later, they hired a coach and traveled about 48 kilometers through the Irish countryside. As Ireland was still lacking freezing temperatures, the landscape was still very green in many places proving that the nickname ‘Emerald Isle’ was very appropriate.

“William, this part of Ireland is beautiful. I’ve never seen grass so vivid green before. And many of the flowers are still in bloom. I love the cottages with their flower boxes and climbing roses or ivy that covers the walls. They are so charming.”

“Yes, they are pretty but not as beautiful as my lovely wife.”

Elizabeth smiled at her husband but refused to let him kiss her while the coach was moving as they were periodically hitting ruts that tossed them about in spite of Darcy holding his wife. “I love you, my dear, but I would prefer not to get a split lip.” Instead, she kissed her finger and then touched his lips, and he was satisfied…for the moment.

Later, they stopped for the night at a small, but clean inn and planned to leave early the next morning. Travel back to Dublin would take most of the day, and they wished to view the Glendalough monastic settlement near the two rivers confluence which had formed two lakes: an upper lake and a lower one. They would have to view the settlement from a distance, but that would allow them to see some of the wildlife as well as the ruins from the 12th century.
